Typographic Animated
Poster Series

This is a project I completed for a typography course, where we had to choose three words based on emotions/vibes and

animated them based on what they represented. I chose the words: Ashamed, Creepy & Cruel. (I had Halloween on the

mind…). I thought it would be fun to animate the physicality these emotions bring by utilizing colour, aspect ratios, fonts,

etc… I went through the process of researching & moodboards type trials, font trials, story-boarding, sketching and colour

palette selection for each of the animations.

Ashamed—16:9 Ratio

This was the most challenging of the animations to complete. due in part to the word having so many letters, and

attempting to convey such a specific emotion within a very short time frame. I decided to utilize the space by

assigning each letter a unique set of movements. By doing so, I can use the combining effects of each character

to give the whole word its emotion. I aimed for the feeling of wanting to hide away and the drop from your chest

to the stomach that shame gives. I also utilized a palette change for the tone shift to contrast ease and unease.

Creepy—9:16 Ratio

This animation is my favourite, I .love the colour palette and font choice. Gurkner was THE perfect fit for this concept.

I gained the idea of adding eyes to the letters during my sketching phase. I wanted to make them look like unique

shaped ghosts that come alive once night falls. It was a bit challenging to ensure that the animation was looping, due

to all the characters having their own independent movements but I think I succeeded by having each one look like its

settling in for the night near the end of the animation.

Cruel—4:5 Ratio

This was the word that was the hardest to choose a font for (Solvent - Regular). A lot of the other fonts in the trial had

one of two problems; it seemed more fitting for a word like creepy/spooky, or were too elaborate. I considered using a

black-letter font as I was thinking of classic horror novels (Dracula, Frankenstein, etc…), but I considered really thinking

about the definition of cruelty which led me to the addition of the smiley face/character.
